Arboretum

Owl's Hill has been certified as a Level 1 Arboretum by the Tennessee Urban Forestry Council.

As part of our commitment to education and conservation, Owl's Hill has chosen 43 species of trees to be part of our arboretum. These trees area labeled with their common names, scientific names, family, and native range. Visitors can use our arboretum specimens to learn about the identifying characteristics of a species and observe the habitat where it grows.

The arboretum species collection includes chestnut oak, red oak, bitternut hickory, blue ash and yellow buckeye in the mature forest along the South Ridge. Below the South Ridge is an orchard, with large pecan trees, a Chinese chestnut tree, pear trees, and a nearby thicket of Kentucky coffee trees. The younger forest near the Visitor's Center is home to chinkapin oak, white oak, shag bark hickory, black cherry, persimmon, Osage orange, paw-paw, eastern red cedar, sugar maple and honey locust trees.

Labeled trees can be found around the Visitor's Center, along the South Ridge and Sharp Creek trails, and along the Orchard paths. Please stay on the path. All trees can be viewed from established trails.
